Preparations for the season apex
After a somewhat last moment planning of the transport and accommodation, we managed to get our boats down to Villagarcia de Arousa in Galicia, Spain. This years Junior World Championship venue promised high currents and little wind, but on our arrival we noticed that the wind was never below sailable conditions. The sailcenter is located inside a bay about 20km from the open Atlantic Ocean, meaning during tidal intervals the currents are extreme. The temperature was great, not to cold but also not to hot, making the sailing very comfortable.
We were able to train for three days, testing the boundaries of the venue and getting used to the local wind directions and waters. On day one our spearing partners unfortunately hit shallow water and broke their daggerboard, but we went out in the afternoon to produce some footage and maximize our speed, testing with Australians and the USA. In the morning we had sailed a couple of races with other teams and built up contact to Thomas Plössl who was there as a coach.
Day two was similarly effective with a lot of boatwork in the morning and two sessions of performance in the afternoon. A lot of speed testing and checking out the venue once again and for the second time, testing our new Gennaker. A big advantage of the venue: the sun is up until past 9pm, making it possible to train long and do boatwork until late.
On the third day the breeze was on and we competed with the boys from Warnemünde. We performed quite well, but have to work a lot on gaining weight, concentrating on the best possible course and getting the head out of the boat. During our last events we have already made huge progresses, our boat is getting better and better and we are hungry for success. Check out our reels on Instagram for some impressions from our training and make sure to leave a comment.
We would also like to thank Kingfisher Ropes for supplying us with the best material, helping us to bring it on during the Junior worlds. A big thank you as well to Brandl nutrition, our supplements sponsor and to Seaclean UK for letting us test their revolutionary boat polish that uses less water and helps save a vital resource and the environment.
