My name is Leander Baumann and I am 19 years old and have always lived in Berlin. My passion for sailing started young, but I only really started to enjoy it when I began sailing 29er skiff. When I was five years old I started sailing the optimist dinghy. I was introduced to sailing through my parents who had both been active trainers until I started the sport. With eight years I started sailing competitively, which I continued doing for another six years in the optimist. When I was 14 I began sailing the 29er, which I have now been doing for almost three years and I have been enjoying every bit of it.

Before I started to sail with Amal previous fall, I sailed with two other helms, which gave me a lot of experience and variation, but also lead to me having to be able to adjust easily to new partners, which I think I managed quite well. I am always working on improving my capabilities and have always had the ambition to be perfect. What I enjoy most about the 29er skiff is its speed, but also the smoothness of maneuvers.

When I am not sailing I enjoy track and field, and regularly participate in competitions of that sport as well. Other hobbies I am passionate about are art, especially drawing, graphic design and making movies. I regularly use my drone and GoPro for filming when I travel or sail. One of my greatest passions is also the protection of nature and our climate. I have been committed to regularly cleaning up the beach and ocean whenever I have the chance to do so.

My studies are also important to me, as I always aim for high marks. I finished school in 2023 and graduated from Nelson-Mandela School bilinguals. I am currently studying architecture in Hamburg. Even though my studies at times put me into a lot of pressure to perform well, I try to forget all of it when I go sailing and need to perform.

Sailing is my greatest passion. Whenever I sail I feel like I am in another world. A future without sailing is not imaginable for me, so it is sure that I want to continue sailing professionally in the 49er skiff.
