Podium at the European championships
After five days of training with the 49ers from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania we started well into the championships. The venue was beautiful and warmer than expected, but the wind was often light and vanished quickly after a certain time of the day. Furthermore the lake was very shallow, which imposed the danger of the mast breaking when capsizing at all time. Fortunately we only capsized once because our trapezes were detached from the mast. We were able to train well with the standard Riggs and focussed a lot on getting to know the venue and sailing races. The main goal for us was to compare ourselves to others.
The competition started well for us. We sailed one race on day one in which we scored second. Day two had even less wind, but we managed to keep up the second place by sailing only seconds. The third day we continued our score line, but when we went out for a second time towards the early evening, we scored third. We also won a protest on that day, which the polish team had imposed on us. It all came down to the final day, with four races planed. Unfortunately we could not keep up our score and fell back to third at the end. We send our congrats to the brothers Sach from Germany, who won the championship, and to the polish team finishing second. Nether the less we are very happy with our result and the possibility of comparing our progression to the progress of others in the new boat. We are focused on training in Berlin during fall now and during winter on Mallorca.
